It wasn't pointless. Now that you are past this arc you see he did all he could combating hidan so that shikamaru could watch and get the intel he would need to return. The only downside was it didn't reveal much of Kakuzu. There were not many other approaches where any of them at all would have survived.
For Suzy and anyone that said his death was pointless. i will tell you why it is the exact opposite.
Since intel on the Akatsuki is incredibly thin and have no idea who the members are aside from Itachi, Kisame Hoshigaki and Deidara (presumed dead). They are fighting S rank shinobi with little to no information about their full abilities. Its a huge disadvantage in a fight like this. Imagine a chess game without knowing how some of the pieces work from your opponent.
Now, Asuma being a high ranked shinobi in the hidden leaf village is one of the only shinobi that would be able to delay an akatsuki member. remember these shinobi are S ranked. That means highly skilled and dangerous individuals. Already presumes he is weaker then the enemy. Which is true because Hidan and kakuzu are your worst enemies when you don't know what they are capable of.
The strategy from Asuma is not to defeat them here. This is where the foreshadowing of the "Climbing Silver" strategy comes in.
The entire point of the Climbing Silver is in order to break through the enemies defenses you have to sacrifice a piece on the board. So when you do break through you have a weakness to exploit. In other words, the sacrificial piece in this case is Asuma. The fight is far from over if you think Shikamaru is just gonna let them live after that.
His death is far from pointless. In fact the amount of information that Shikamaru already got with this 1 fight is tremendous. Far more information that the leaf has over any other akatsuki member apart from the above mentioned ones.
