I think you've just been underestimating the Akatsuki. They're all on Kage level, so don't expect the good guys to always win against such foes.

I think they purposely made Asuma the focus of the last filler to make you care about his death. Would you have been this sad if you skipped that filler? I'm not sure if I would have.

Asuma's nephew Konohamaru is the last of the Sarutobi family in the Leaf Village. They never showed Konohamaru's parents or told us what happened to them. He 's lost both his parents. And now both his uncle and his grandpa in a seemingly short period of time.
You will be missed Asuma Sarutobi.

No it is not pointless, cause Shikamaru is still alive, and he figured out the secret on Hidan's jutsu, he also witnessed their abilities Hidan being an immortal and kakuzu can detach his arm from his body. Don't forget that if things didn't happened Hidan and Kakuzu will attack Konoha in search of Naruto since they are already at the Land of Fire. One death is a good trade for the invaluable information they learned and since Shikamaru knows it and is a brilliant tactician, he can make a good strategy for their next encounter. If this battle has any lesson it is fighting the unknown is much scarier than fighting the expected.
