It wasn't a waste. Asama's death will light a fire under Shikamaru. And a genius like him motivated is a force to be reckoned with.

You saying it's pointless is so dishonoring to Asuma's death. Reality is that's life, and that's war. You dont always come out with rainbows and happy endings, you may never even defeat the enemy after giving your own life for it- but what's important is doing your best in the moment, which is what Asuma did.

Naruto is the amazing show it is because it's not rainbows and unicorns like most animes - it maintains a sense of reality. I hope you're able to glean that.
