Kakashi entered combat with Pain knowing he didn't have a high chance of survival. He also could have survived, but he chose to use the last of his chakra to get the info on Pain to everyone else. The rest of the Pain arc is really good, so hopefully you don't wait too long to get back to watching.

It’s not that Kakashi is weak it’s that Pain and Jiriya are in a completely different class than him.

Don't give up on the series suzy. Its definitely worth continuing. Rip Kakashi

This is the part where you should no longer underestimate Villains. Kakashi at best is a A- Tier, while Pain is SS tier. There are villains/heros that are SSS tier, but you haven't made it that far into shippuden to Know who they are yet.
