I think what the person is trying to say is often times emotions cloud your judgement and this is especially true for many fans that often are a bit more close minded to what is actually being presented in the story. Everyone has there own ways of looking at things or viewing anime. There are some who try to deeply analyze every little piece of the story and subtly that is going on even down to the production visuals, animation, etc, there are some that grows positive or negative attachments to some characters and views them more at face value with kind of love/rate relationship well there are others that look at it from a creators logical standpoint or authors point of view and try to understand rationally what is happening and how the characters are written in the story and their dynamics and complexities, be it antagonist or protagonist. Personally I am of the later but you can't expect every fan to view a story in this way. I guess that is why its easier for some one to watch something more generic and not something with high quality of writing and still enjoy it. My sister for example loves fairy tail because of all the fluff, pairings and almost fan fictional moments that hiro mashima likes to throw in your face despite the fact that it has so many flaws and inconsistencies in its story telling.
