Excalibur - Sword Art Online 2 Episode 17 Reaction
Comments
I love your content on SAO Suzy, but what's going on now? I joined when I found that I couldn't watch this episode right when it came out and became a paying member exclusively to watch the SAO reactions. I understand getting hooked on an anime you love, because that's exactly how I feel with SAO, but I'm just a bit disappointed that it's taking so long to get to the next episode. I don't have anyone else I can really watch this with sadly. My friends either don't like anime, or think that this one is too depressing. Please start watching SAO again.
I'm so glad to finally see this up!
So, a few things:
First, this quest was a reference to a nordic myth where Thrymmr stole Mjolnir from Thor so that he could use it as a bargaining chip to force Freyja to marry him. Instead, Thor disguised himself as Freyja, and when he received Mjolnir back, he killed all the giants for their actions. Seeing this story with that background information makes this incredibly cool because you can anticipate the twist. Leafa even alluded to it in the previous episode, where she mentioned that the story sounded familiar.
Second, don't be so hard on Kirito. There's no romantic behavior going on between him and Sinon, and she made that comment solely to irritate everyone and get back at Kirito for his behavior in Phantom Bullet. His response was just an acknowledgement of their friendship, and if I recall correctly from the light novels his promise to think of her extends not only to Shino, but to all of his other friends that gave him help in obtaining Excalibur. Thereafter, he only uses Excalibur for special reasons or on special occasions, rather than just using it for personal benefit, as a form of tribute to the fact that he owes his ownership of it to everyone who helped him out.
Lastly, Kirito's ego isn't really something to worry about. If you haven't noticed, he usually acts cocky and confident, but inside he's extremely unsure of himself and harbors many regrets and self-loathing for his previous failures. It's part of what makes him a legitimately good and complex character, because there's more to him than what he allows others to see on the surface.
Anyways, that's it for the Caliber mini arc. Up next is one of the most beloved stories in the series, which is saying quite a bit. I'll be looking forward to your reactions to it!
